How to Choose the Right Abaya Size and Length

2 min read

Fit, made simple

One of the questions we hear most is, "How do I choose my size?" It is a fair question, especially when you are shopping online. The good news is that abayas are forgiving, flowing garments. With a tape measure and five minutes, you can choose with confidence.

What you will need

  • A soft tape measure (a piece of string and a ruler works too)
  • The shoes you usually wear with your abaya
  • A friend, sister or daughter to help, if possible

The measurements that matter

1. Length

Length is the most important measurement for an abaya. Stand straight in your usual shoes. Measure from the top of your shoulder, beside your neck, down to where you want the hem to fall. For most women that is around the ankle or just above the floor.

Compare this number with the length given in the product details. If you are between two lengths, think about your shoes. Wear heels for weddings? Choose slightly longer. Wear flat sandals for daily errands? A touch shorter keeps the hem clean on dusty roads.

2. Bust and shoulders

Measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level. Abayas are meant to skim the body, not hug it. So look for a size that gives you comfortable room to move, sit and pray.

3. Sleeve length

Measure from your shoulder to your wrist with your arm relaxed. This matters most for closed and open abayas with fitted cuffs. Butterfly and kimono styles have wide, flowing sleeves, so sleeve length is less critical there.

Choosing a fit by style

  • Closed abayas: Follow the bust and length measurements closely, as these are worn without layering.
  • Open abayas: You will often wear these over a dress or inner, so allow a little extra room.
  • Butterfly and kimono abayas: These are generous and relaxed by design. Length is the key measurement.
  • Embellished and occasion abayas: Check the length carefully. Detail at the hem or sleeves looks best when it falls exactly where it should.

Tips for petite and tall sisters

If you are petite, a hem that is too long can overwhelm your frame. Choose the length that sits at your ankle. A belted or tie-waist style can also help define your shape modestly.

If you are tall, check lengths carefully before ordering. Open abayas worn over a long inner dress can be a lovely solution if a hem sits a little high.

Common sizing mistakes

  • Measuring without shoes, then wearing heels
  • Choosing a tight fit that restricts movement during prayer
  • Guessing instead of checking the product description
  • Forgetting that you may layer under an open abaya
